Notes

The village of Leverano stands on the fertile plain of the Salento hinterland, a fertile territory particularly prepared for cultivation. This feature is noted by observing the expanses of vineyards and olive groves that surround the village, to which is added floriculture, another characteristic activity of the village. History The origins of Leverano seem to date back to the 6th century AD moment when the Greeks, who escaped the destruction of some farmhouses by Totila, king of the Huns, took refuge in the area giving rise to the first settlements. In the 9th century the town was devastated by the Saracens but was later rebuilt by the Normans and fortified at the behest of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the first half of the 13th century. A further strengthening of the defensive structures of the settlement occurred by the Chiaromonte, Counts of Copertino, in the fourteenth century. Subsequently it underwent several dominations and, starting from the unification of Italy, it followed the fate of the surrounding territories.

What to see

The village of Leverano is characterized by the presence of numerous religious architectures. The Mother Church is dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata and was built on a pre-existing building between 1582 and 1603. The church suffered serious damage during the earthquake of 1743 and was therefore renovated in 1747. Inside there are several elements of artistic value, including the eighteenth-century altars dedicated to Souls and San Rocco, the 24-seat choir, the statue depicting San Rocco and the seventeenth-century paintings representing the Deposition of the Cross and the apostles Andrea and Giovanni. The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie dates back to the second half of the fifteenth century while the adjoining convent of the Friars Minor was built in the second half of the sixteenth century. In the historic center of Leverano you can visit the church of Santa Maria, a small seventeenth-century baroque building. Inside there is a fine altar in Lecce stone, in the center of which there is a large altarpiece depicting the Virgin and Child between two Saints. Seat of the confraternity of the Purging Souls, the Church of San Benedetto was built in 1625 probably on a pre-existing building dating back to the fifteenth century. Inside are preserved: a papier-mâché bas-relief from 1919 depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, a 17th century canvas depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints Benedict and Anthony of Padua, a late 17th century canvas dedicated to Purging Souls, a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie and a papier-mâché statue depicting San Benedetto. The church of the Madonna della Consolazione dates back to the 17th century and its construction is linked, according to tradition, to the miraculous discovery of an image of the Virgin. The building was then rebuilt in 1965: the elevation from church to parish in 1957 required the expansion of the structure. The Torre Federiciana, a national monument since 1870, stands 28 meters high to guard the town. Tradition has it that it was built at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia in 1220 in order to monitor the nearby Ionian coast. In the surrounding area there are also numerous farms.

To taste

The agricultural sector is the basis of the economy of Leverano. Among the products that best represent the territory and the traditional cuisine of the village, olives, vegetables and grapes stand out, in particular the Negroamaro and Malvasia vineyards. Famous are the typical wines of this area, among which we remember: Leverano Bianco, Leverano Bianco Passito, Leverano Malvasia Bianca, Leverano Negroamaro Rosato, Leverano Negroamaro Rosso. As for the traditional dishes of the village to mention the friselle, one of the most typical breads of the province of Lecce, and the orecchiette, made of fresh pasta with a rounded shape and golden yellow color that best tells the gastronomic traditions of the area.

What to do:

The events and shows organized in Leverano are linked to the traditions and economy of the village and also to studies and research that make the places and monuments of Leverano increasingly accessible, even to people with disabilities. On the fourth Sunday of May the Cherry Fair takes place, linked to the celebrations in honor of the Madonna della Consolazione. The cattle fair is also held in conjunction with this fair. From July to September the village is animated by a rich program of cultural events included in the Leverano summer festival. The Patronal Feast of San Rocco takes place on August 16 and includes religious celebrations, including the traditional procession and liturgical celebration, and civil events: lights, band concerts, shows and fireworks. A key event to discover local products is the Novello in Festa event organized in mid-November and dedicated to new wine: it attracts many visitors and includes tastings and music events
